How to Find Loose Slots

Playing a slot machine is like starring in your own television show. Each spin is a five-second episode. There’s tension, excitement, resolution, a few laughs, some tears, plenty of cliffhangers,Basil NestorBasil Nestor is the author of the new Playboy Complete Guide to Casino Gambling. This wonderful book teaches players how to avoid sucker bets and win more when playing gambling games.  He is also the author of The Smarter Bet Guide series for video poker, slots, craps, and many other books about gambling.  Basil's website is www.smarterbet.com  and then the episode ends. What will happen next? The machine is just one big never-ending “must-see” promotion until you start the next game. Of course, winning is the obvious goal, but anticipation keeps people coming back. Everyone loves that delicious feeling when the show is starting and anything can happen. That’s why players sit and spin for hours. That’s also why so many of the newest slots are based on TV shows and movies. In fact, all modern slots have a theme and “story” that plays out in the sequence of wins and losses.
You should know this for two reasons. First, all stories are not alike (and I don’t mean Wheel of Fortune is different from Hollywood Squares). Rather, a particular game has a unique character, and it will produce wins with frequencies and in amounts different from other games. Your enjoyment of the contest will be enhanced when you choose a game with payouts that fit your taste.
Second, a game that you choose for enjoyment may not necessarily be the easiest game to beat. For example, Game A is fun and it has payouts to fit your taste. But Game B pays back more over time. You have a decision. Should you play the game that is more fun, or the one that gives you a better shot at finishing with a net win? Should you choose the fun of entertainment or the fun of profit?
This question frequently arises in all types of gambling, but it’s particularly common for slots. Sometimes the decision is easy, but other times it requires the wisdom of Solomon. Keep this mind as we explore strategies for finding loose games.
Paying the Most from Coast to Coast
A nickel machine requires the same amount of electricity, maintenance, and floor space as a machine that takes dollars. Even though nickel games are designed to attract players with smaller budgets, the machines still must earn a profit. Lower-denomination games do this by being tighter than higher-denomination games.
Thus nickel slots typically pay back less than quarter slots. Quarters are tighter than dollars. Dollars are tighter than five-dollar games, and so on. There are exceptions to this rule, but not many.

The above figures are percent payback averages from totals reported in the summer of 2005. They include slots and video poker. Notice that machines are generally looser at higher denominations.
Size Matters

Big jackpots are created by reducing the size or frequency of smaller payoffs, so the tightest machines are usually million-dollar progressives. Similar math applies to flat-top machines with large top jackpots. Generally, your chance of hitting the big prize goes up when the size of that prize goes down, and mid-size jackpots become easier to hit, too.
