BOSTON, Massachusetts – As reported by the Cape Cod Times: "Gov. Deval Patrick yesterday told municipal leaders he was considering slots machines and casinos as a way to help close a $1
billion budget gap and provide more money to cities and towns.
"Patrick said the state faces a 'structural deficit' of more than $1 billion in the state fiscal year that begins July 1, unless revenue increases or spending is cut.
"…Patrick also wanted to hear the opinions of local leaders on whether Massachusetts should allow slots parlors and casinos.
"…Later, while fielding questions from local officials, Patrick reiterated he was open to the possibility of expanded gaming. He has said he would like to make a decision by the end of his first three months in office…"
