Port Huron Council Hears Casino Proposal

PORT HURON, Michigan -- As reported by the Port Huron Times-Herald: "Port Huron Development of Clinton Township unveiled two development proposals Monday to the City Council. One proposal includes

The other includes the company making "serious structural renovations" to McMorran Place, then leasing the facility from the city. Company officials also expressed interest in buying the Port Huron Flags hockey team.

"The 500-room hotel would include 475 rooms and 25 luxury suites. Site plans revealed Monday show the hotel and casino built in an area bounded by Huron Avenue, Andrew Murphy Drive, Michigan Avenue and Beers Street. Fort Street would be closed to through traffic and a conference and banquet center would be built east of the hotel, between it and the St. Clair River.

"...It's unclear if the 2001 vote by city residents in favor of a plan by the Bay Mills Indian Community to build a casino at the Thomas Edison Inn would cover this proposal, as well. Outgoing Gov. John Engler signed off on the Bay Mills plan, which was a land-swap deal for the Upper Peninsula tribe that satisfied a long-standing dispute with the state. The issue remains stalled in Congress..."
